One year ago, April 19th 2023, close to Bakhmut, three comrades came under artillery fire. The attack of the Russian occupation forces in Ukraine brought their life to an end. Few days latter a vigil took place in Kyiv to remember them and their struggle. Two of those comrades joined the ranks of the Rojava revolution years before they decided to go to Ukraine, and we sent a letter for their funeral.

In memory of Dimitriy Petrov and all comrades who fell fighting for freedom in Ukraine.
We have been following the situation in Ukraine for several years, with special interest in anarchist comrades who decided to take up arms against the invasion. The anarchist movement has deep roots in Ukraine and we can hear the echos of the struggle of Nestor Makhno, of Maria Nikiforova, of the black army, calling for freedom or death. It is in their spirit that we salute the committed militants working and fighting to defend the people of Ukraine.
We were very sad to hear that some of our friends and comrades gave their life in the front lines on the April 19th. Dmitriy Petrov, Ilya Leshy, Fil Kuznetsov, Lev, heval Arteş. He carried many names as he carried the struggle in many places, because international revolutionaries know no borders. A treacherous attack took his life on the outskirts of Bahkmut, together with other international volunteers that joined the resistance in Ukraine. Among them was a beloved Irish comrade, Finbar Cafferkey, known in Rojava as heval Çiya, who spent time in Rojava, fighting and working to defend the revolution of Northeast Syria. An American comrade, a Black autonomist Cooper “Harris” Andrews also lost his life together with Finbar and Dmitry. Since then the list of names of comrades who fell in resistance against the Russian invasion, keeps growing.
We will always remember their names, their passion and their commitment to struggle for a better world. As revolutionaries, we have the responsibility to transform our sadness and anger into strength, to keep up the struggle that our comrades gave their life for. We owe it to them.
Dmitriy played an important role connecting the Kurdish revolutionary experience with Russian anarchist militants. The website he worked with, “Hevale,” published important articles and translations that built bridges of solidarity. Together with analysis and reflections about the revolution and the Kurdish liberation struggle, it also gave voice to our organization some years ago, publishing an interview about our perspectives and works in Rojava. He opened a door for us, connecting movements and struggles, bringing us closer to our Russian-speaking anarchist comrades.
His efforts to connect revolutionary ideas and movements were not only with words; he took action in many different forms against injustice. The brutal repression of the Russian state, with many of anarchists arrested and tortured, could not break his revolutionary spirit, his determination, his commitment to the struggle against oppression and domination. Together with his organization, BOAK, they set an example of active resistance that despite very hard conditions managed to confront and attack the authoritarian regime of Putin’s Russia.
Comrades who fell on the April 19th decided to join the armed resistance in Ukraine, not only to fight the Russian state, but also to defend the people of Ukraine. This is not an easy decision and Dmitriy was aware of the consequences of his actions. He did not hide the contradictions facing anarchists fighting the Russian invasion under the Ukrainian army. As he did in Kurdistan, he acknowledged and reflected on the difficulties and the contradictions, never seeing them as an excuse to neglect his revolutionary duty. Rather he saw them as a source of political reflection and ideological discussion and he took time and effort to write and discuss about them. His theoretical works contributed to light a path, to bring clarity to what anarchists can and should do in these turbulent times we live in. His practical steps set an example of engagement and commitment to struggle, that from now on we will also carry on in his memory.
The ones that fall defending the people will be carried on in our hearts.
Their bodies are no longer with us, but their spirits will live forever in the struggle.

В течение нескольких лет мы следили за ситуацией в Украине, с особым вниманием на анархистов и анархисток, решивших сопротивляться вторжению с оружием в руках. Анархистское движение имеет глубокие корни в Украине, и мы слышим отголоски борьбы Нестора Махно, Марии Никифоровой, Чёрной армии, призывавших к свободе или смерти. Именно с ними в мыслях мы шлём привет преданным своему делу товарищам и товарищкам, трудящимся и сражающимся в защиту народа Украины.
Мы были очень опечалены известием о том, что 19 апреля некоторые из наших товарищей отдали свою жизнь на передовой. Дмитрий Петров, Илья Леший, Фил Кузнецов, Лев, хевал Артеш. Он носил много имен, так как он вёл борьбу во многих местах, потому что как революционер-интернационалист, он не знал границ. Его жизнь оборвалась в бою на окраине Бахкмута, вместе с другими международными добровольцами, которые присоединились к сопротивлению в Украине. Среди них был ирландский товарищ, Финбар Кафферки, известный в Рожаве как хевал Чия, который также ранее сражался и трудился для защиты революции Северо-Восточной Сирии. Вместе с Финбаром и Дмитрием погиб и американский товарищ, чернокожий автономист Купер “Харрис” Эндрюс. С тех пор список имён товарищей, которые погибли, сражаясь против российского вторжения, продолжает расти.
Мы всегда будем помнить их имена, их храбрость и приверженность борьбе за лучший мир. Как революционеры и революционерки, мы обязаны превратить нашу печаль и гнев в силу, чтобы продолжать борьбу, за которую наши товарищи и товарищки отдали свою жизнь. Мы в долгу перед ними.
Дмитрий сыграл важную роль в соединении курдского революционного опыта с российским анархизмом. На сайте проекта “Хевале”, в котором он трудился, публиковались важные статьи и переводы, которые наводили мосты солидарности между двумя регионами. Наряду с анализом и размышлениями о революции и курдской освободительной борьбе, этот проект также дал слово нашей организации несколько лет назад, опубликовав интервью о нашем опыте и деятельности в Рожаве. Это интервью, которое Дмитрий взял у нас, открыло для нас возможность, приблизив нас к нашим русскоговорящим товарищам и товарищкам.
Его усилия по объединению революционных идей и движений не ограничивались только словами; он подкреплял их делом в борьбе против несправедливости. Жестокие репрессии российского государства, когда многие анархисты и анархистки были арестованы и подвергнуты пыткам, не смогли сломить его революционный дух, его решимость, его приверженность борьбе против угнетения и господства. Дмитрий и организация, участником которой он являлся – БОАК – показали пример активного сопротивления, и, несмотря на очень тяжелые условия, смогли противостоять авторитарному режиму путинской России и атаковать его.
Трое товарищей, погибших 19 апреля, решили присоединиться к вооруженному сопротивлению в Украине, чтобы не только бороться с российским государством, но и защищать народ Украины. Это непростое решение, и Дмитрий осознавал последствия своих действий. Он не скрывал дилемм, с которыми сталкиваются анархисты и анархистки, сражающиеся с российским вторжением в рядах украинской армии. Как и в Курдистане, он обозначал и размышлял о трудностях и противоречиях, никогда не рассматривая их как оправдание для пренебрежения своим революционным долгом. Напротив, он видел в них источник политических размышлений и идеологических дискуссий и уделял время и усилия, чтобы писать и обсуждать их. Его теоретические тексты помогли осветить тропу, внести ясность в то, что анархистское движение может и должно делать сейчас. Его практические шаги показали пример вовлечённости и приверженности борьбе, который отныне мы также будем продолжать в память о нём.
Те, кто погибли, защищая народ, будут жить в наших сердцах.
Их тела больше не с нами, но их дух будет вечно жить в борьбе.

Heval Arteş was among the first internationalists to come to Rojava in early 2016. His initiative, his actions and the words he wrote were and inspiration for many anarchists, especially in Russia, to support and fight for the revolution in Rojava.
We will remember him next to our most dear fallen comrades, and his spirit and struggle has been inmortalized next to a mural of our şehids.
Heval Çiya spent long time in Rojava, and we will always remember his dedication and humbleness. He was an example for many comrades and a voice that connected Rojava with the revolutionary spirit of Ireland.
